A leader’s main role is to create a culture where his or her people have the opportunity to find fulfillment. Creating such a culture doesn’t guarantee that they will find it, but it does give them a chance.
Taking the time to really get to know your people is critical to this process of building the right culture that allows them to thrive. Beware: doing this will (especially for achievers and doers) feel like you are taking yourself out of the game somehow. But, you will find over time that it is the most important work you will ever do as a leader.
Employees can find fulfillment at the same time that the organization is thriving. Build a culture that gives them a chance.
This is not easy. Not by a long shot. But, it’s completely worth it.
- Why are you leading?
- What are your employees looking for at work? What are their expectations?
- Do your employees know that they are entitled to have fulfillment at work?
