Last week, I had the privilege of speaking on Align Online FB live where we discussed community. After that conversation, I realized that this is a topic that everyone can relate to. As humans we were built for community, but we often struggle to make meaningful connections with others.
Before you go searching for authentic community, you have to know what you are looking for. A distorted view of community will be your greatest enemy and will rob you of being known, heard, and valued for who you are.
True authentic community is a melting pot of people’s diverse worldviews. Every person that you meet already has their own unique traditions, hopes, preferences, experiences, and beliefs. Diversity will only enhance the authenticity of your community.
In order to have real, meaningful relationships you have to do the hard work to pursue people. Make the conscious effort to be vulnerable and empathetic—to invite accountability. You can not assume proximity promotes intentionality.
Everyday is a pursuit. As people we are continually growing and changing. You will need to put in the work to ensure that your community is maturing together. Don’t expect instant results. Be patient. You will know that you have found true authentic community when time and distance are no longer able to disrupt it.
Pursue people and do it on purpose.
